You don't understand science, you don't understand what it means to know something, you don't understand faith, you grossly misunderstand people and categorize them according to your aggrandized concept of yourself. One minute he hates his family next second he changes. The historical data and the characters in this book were fascinating, I just had a little trouble with the format. There's a breathtaking intimacy to the characters and their relationships to one another: these are people with whom the author has lived for a long time. A Fool Such As I15.
Having said that, she writes about an amazing period and real people who I have not heard of previously feel quite ignorant. That's not a healthy outlook. I'm sorry you chose this hill to die on. That is one reason why I picked this book up! I sensed the instant layer of protection between me and the world. I really, really wanted to love this book, but it just put me to sleep every night. It was impeccably researched and I loved the cameos of prominent figures like Auden and Isherwood.
Little by little the group had to flee Germany as the Nazi hold of the country tightened. The novel is told through flashbacks and in alternate voices.
